Synopsis

The pivotal blinded validation of the second-generation Afirma Genomic Sequencing Classifier on 191 Bethesda III/IV indeterminate fine-needle aspirates from 49 U.S. centres, collected June 2009 to December 2010 from patients who all had surgery without genomic information. The classifier had 91% sensitivity (95% CI 79-98) and identified at least one third more benign thyroid nodules among those deemed indeterminate by cytopathology than the original Afirma test. Kennedy is tenth of twenty-two authors.
